Design That Works

Visually, Culturally, and Acoustically

Oro Hīnaki is more than just a sound panel — it’s a statement piece that combines Māori design, indigenous knowledge, and acoustic performance.

POutama web.png

Poutama – Tane's accent to obtain the baskets of knowledge

The Poutama pattern — with its ascending steps — traditionally represents the pursuit of knowledge, growth, and elevation. The steps and challenges on your journey.

In acoustic terms, this stepped geometry also plays a functional role:

The tiered, angular surface helps break up sound waves, reducing harsh echoes and scattering high-frequency reflections across a space.

This creates a more balanced, less ‘boomy’ or ‘sharp’ acoustic environment, supporting clarity and calm.

Just as Poutama symbolises climbing toward higher understanding, the Oro Hīnaki panel helps lift the quality of sound in a space — transforming noise into clarity and harmony.

Tāniko – Structure, Balance, and Control.

Tāniko patterns are known for their precision, symmetry, and storytelling. Traditionally woven into cloaks, they hold identity, mana, and whakapapa.

In Oro Hīnaki, the geometric repetition of Tāniko has acoustic benefits too:

Niho Taniwha (the monsters teeth)

It introduces micro-variations in surface depth and angle, which help scatter and diffuse sound waves, especially in the mid to high-frequency range.

The jagged, angled surfaces act like acoustic "teeth"  disrupting unwanted reflections and taming noisy spaces

Just as a taniwha protects and balances its environment, Oro Hīnaki helps shape the acoustic energy of a room, bringing clarity and calm.

ART MEETS FUNCTION

Inspired by the traditional hīnaki eel trap, Oro Hīnaki is an innovative acoustic panel that manages sound the way a net manages water life.

Traditional hīnaki nets are selective fishing tools designed by Māori to allow small water life to swim free, while capturing larger eels (tuna).

Just as a hīnaki allows small eels to pass through while capturing the larger ones, Oro Hīnaki captures low-frequency sound waves, while high-frequency waves are reflected and diffused by its three-dimensional surface geometry.

Low frequencies (bass tones) are absorbed and dissipated within the panel’s internal structure, reducing unwanted reverberation.

High frequencies (treble and sharper sounds) interact with the 3D pattern, creating natural diffusion and scattering to soften harsh reflections.

This approach blends acoustic performance with Māori-inspired design, offering both sonic clarity and visual impact. Our panels are designed to bring balance, calm, and beauty to your home or workspace while inspiring and enhancing your creative space. Each piece softens noise while showcasing bold patterns that honor our traditional identity and storytelling.

Acoustic panels aren’t just for music studios — they improve comfort, communication, and productivity in all kinds of spaces.

Here is how they work and why they're essential in modern environments.

  • Noise Reduction: Panels absorb excess sound and reduce echo (reverberation), making spaces quieter and clearer.

  • Improved Speech Clarity: Ideal for classrooms, offices, retail & hospitality spaces and public buildings — helps people hear and understand each other better.

  • Enhanced Aesthetic: Oro Acoustics panels are designed as art pieces, not just functional tools.

  • Increased Productivity & Wellbeing: Studies show that better acoustics reduce stress and improve focus.

  • Customisation: our panels can reflect cultural identity, brand, or story.
